It’s been quite the journey, hasn’t it? From watching them yell at each other passionately to watching them drool over each other passionately. Yeah, we’re so glad this marriage made it out of the dumps. Let’s see how this ends…

Six months had passed since that night the Koomson couple officially made up. It was safe to say that the air of acrimony had long been blown out of their home. They were truly back together again as a happy couple. The tension that had taken a hold of their relationship had finally given way to a renewed sense of connection, and intentionality had replaced the autopilot mode they had switched to.

Nicky had also started going for therapy to properly deal with his temper issues. After a deep conversation with Winnie, he had decided that leaving the volcano dormant was not good enough; it needed to be dealt with properly. The sessions had been coming along smoothly, with Nicky having to face past issues and confront them head-on. It wasn’t the easiest thing to deal with, but for the sake of his family, he had to get it done.

They had also made it a point to see Philip and Adeline at least once a month for counselling tips and advice. The whole ‘island mentality’ was well and truly in the bin. They now appreciated the importance of having older, wiser and deeply experienced third parties in their lives to direct them and help them where necessary.

This reconciliation train was on the move, and there was no stopping it.

On this lovely Saturday afternoon, they were in one of Elmina’s resorts, having visited Winnie’s parents and had a grand time with them. Seated at a quaint table not very far from the beautiful sights of the sea, Nicky and Winnie clinked their glasses filled with chilled sobolo. Their smiles were genuine and warm as they exchanged glances while watching as the waves crashed against the rocks.

Winnie leaned forward, smiling at her husband. “You know, baby, these past couple of months have been pretty sweet and tough, but I feel like we’ve come through stronger. I never thought I’d say this, but… I think I’m more in love with you now than before.”

Nicky’s eyes softened as he gazed lovingly at her. He reached across the table, gently squeezing her hand. “I feel the same way, honey. I never thought I could love you more than I did when I first met you, but I do. We’ve learned, grown, and I’m committed to making this work. Our marriage means everything to me, and I’m gonna do whatever it takes to make sure we’re happy together.”

Intertwining their fingers, the sweet smile remained on her face. “We’re gonna make it, Nicky. We definitely will. This marriage is gonna go all the way. I love you so much, and I can’t imagine my life without you.”

“Me too, honey. And amen to that. Even through the tough times, the periods where we’ll have to be more parents than lovers, through any other conflicts that come up, we’re gonna make it. We’re never going back to those toxic days, and we’re never raising the issue of divorce ever again. It’s you and me until the end, baby. Until the end.”

“Amen to that, Nicky.”

They smiled and held hands, sharing a tender moment, committing fully to making this marriage work, no matter what.

Winnie then straightened herself. “Umm, babe, excuse me for a minute. I need to use the washroom.”

“No problem. I don’t mind watching your sexy self walk away while I wait.”

Winnie laughed. “Naughty boy,” she scolded playfully as she got up and made her way to the washroom.

Left alone, Nicky took in the surroundings, appreciating the beauty of the surrounding, feeling a huge depth of gratitude for an eventual restoration of this marriage.

This was all he needed: to have these lovely moments with his wife.

Just as he was lost in his reflections, a figure approached their table.

The man had a sly grin on his face, and Nicky squinted, trying to recall where he had seen that face before. He seemed quite familiar.

“Mister Nicky, right? Nicholas Koomson?”

Nicky nodded.

“Yes, yes. Long time no see.”

Nicky still looked slightly confused. “Uh, yeah. Do I know you?”

The man chuckled, taking the seat opposite Nicky. “Ei, so you’ve forgotten so soon. We had quite the chat about your divorce. The divorce you wanted done ‘quickly’.”

Nicky’s eyes widened in recognition.

It was Mr. Graham Boakye! The first lawyer he went to consult about the divorce!

Nicky slapped his forehead. “Oh, right, right, right! You’re the lawyer I saw.”

Mr. Boakye nodded and leaned back, a smug smirk on his face. “The very same. So, what happened? I remember you were in quite a hurry to end things back then. No counselling, no nothing. You just wanted to sign some sankwas divorce papers and go. Anaa you no go do again? Love is too sweet, abi?”

Nicky scratched his head, a sheepish grin playing on his lips. The irony!

Nicky shrugged. “Umm… yeah, I think I was a bit too aggressive at the time.”

Mr. Boakye chuckled. “A bit? Massa, you were practically storming out of my office, insulting me under your breath. If you knew how disgusted the receptionist was with your behaviour, eh?”

Nicky chuckled nervously. Yeah, he had been one horribly unpleasant man to deal with back then.

Mr. Boakye smirked. “Well, I’m glad to see you’re not in such a hurry today. Things seem to have taken a turn for the better.”

Nicky nodded. “Yeah, my beautiful wife and I managed to work things out. It’s been quite a journey since, but at the end of the day, we’re definitely not willing to give up on our marriage.”

Mr. Boakye nodded, his expression softening. “That’s very good to hear, Nicky. Divorce is never a pleasant process. I really don’t like having to do it, unless we’re dealing with serious levels of abuse or some incurable infidelity matters. Generally, it’s for better and for worse, till death do you part, in your old age. Some couples still don’t manage to turn things around, though, so I’m very happy for you both.”

“Thanks, boss. It’s been a journey, and we’ve both learned a lot. And uh, I appreciate you telling me to take my time back then. I was in too much of a rage to understand you, but, I do now, and I’m thankful.”

“Oh, you’re welcome. Sometimes, a bit of patience can make all the difference. People say things in the heat of the moment, but it’s the choices we make in sobriety that are the best. That’s why it’s said that you don’t make permanent decisions based on temporary feelings. The anger would eventually die, but you’ll be left to face your choices alone.”

As Nicky nodded in agreement, Mr. Boakye then leaned forward. “And uh, I know enough to know that beauty is not the most important factor when it comes to marriage and all, but… anka you wanted to divorce this fine girl? Really? Supermodel wei? Ei, Mr. Koomson!”

Nicky shook his head and grinned sheepishly again. “Sir, anger is not a good thing. Trust me, I myself have observed her and I was like, herh, Nicholas Koomson! So you wanted to divorce this babe? You no well.”

Their laughter echoed, as Winnie returned to the table. Mr. Boakye saw her and immediately stood to his feet. She smiled warmly at him, saying a brief hello before turning to Nicky.

Nicky smiled. “So… babe. This is…uh, a friend I met a while back. His name is Mr. Graham Boakye, and he’s a lawyer. Mr. Boakye, my amazing and absolutely gorgeous wife, Winnie Koomson.”

Mr. Boakye stretched out his hand. “Pleasure to meet you, Winnie. You are a fine young lady, if I might say. Perfect for a fine young gentleman like your husband.”

Winnie blushed. “Thank you, sir.”

Nicky spoke up. “So, we were talking about him possibly becoming our family lawyer. You know, when we start putting together plans of building our new houses and all that, he’ll be the one to help us out.”

“Ohhh, nice! That would be awesome!”

Mr. Boakye exchanged a brief glance with Nicky, and nodded, understanding the assignment immediately.

“Yep, that’s it. You know, I can see you two were having some romantic time. I can meet you later on this evening when I come for dinner with my wife and daughter. Then we can talk about all that. Is that okay with you?”

“Sure, sure, that’s fine!”

THE END

And that brings the tale of Nicky and Winnie’s union to a close! Yep, sometimes it’s all about going back to the basics of relationship dynamics. Being intentional about doing the things that made you and your spouse fall for each other. Can’t depend on auto-pilot mode; you’d be doing your union more harm than good.
