So, Kwesi and Nana Ayiba are finally together. Almost looked like it wouldn’t happen, but it did, thank goodness! Let’s see how this ends now…

“Okay, Maa, Daddy, how do I look?”

Kwesi stood in front of the phone and posed in his dazzling black and gold kaftan.

“Yie-yieeeeeee! Me wura, see how our last baby is looking dapper!”

Mesee! He’s not easy kraaa! What a wow!”

Kwesi laughed at the reactions of his parents as they oohed and aahed over him from their living room back in Kumasi.

Three months in, and the relationship was growing beautifully. They were spending so much time together, discovering more and more about each other, and both Kwesi and Nana Ayiba could sense their feelings growing stronger by the day. Neither party had openly said it, but they could tell that day by day, they were drawing closer to that point where they could tell the other ‘I love you’ and actually mean it, not just from an emotional standpoint, but with everything in them.

It was only the previous month that Kwesi had informed his parents about his budding relationship, and as you’d expect, his mother was overjoyed, now joking that she had a prophetic gene in her. It was hilarious, but heartwarming to see them so excited for him. Of course, Nana Ayiba was yet to meet them, but had spoken to them on the phone and was already fond of them, especially his mother and her ever-jovial nature.

That evening was to be their first official date as a couple, and he was absolutely looking forward to it.

“Okay, okay, thank you very much,” Kwesi stated, walking back to pick up the phone. “So yeah, I’m on my way to her place.”

“Alright, son. Have fun, wai,” his father declared.

“Yes, yes. And take pictures ooo. I want to see pictures. Nice and beautiful pictures,” his mother added.

“Eiii, Yaa Asantewaa nono! What will you use the pictures for?”

“Ah, so I can’t get pictures of our last baby and his girl to admire?”

Kwesi shook his head and laughed. Good ol’ Mr. and Mrs. Amamfi at their usual banter. It never got old and annoying; it always made him laugh to hear or see them troll each other.

Hopefully, he and Nana Ayiba would have something this beautiful going forward.

Boss, we’ll be moving soon…

Standing outside the front door of the Mensah home, Kwesi sent the message. A couple of seconds later, and a response came.

👍🏽👍🏽lemme know when you arrive

He nodded, then turned to the door, his heart racing with anticipation as he knocked. He adjusted his collar nervously, running a hand through his hair as he waited for her to appear.

After about two minutes of waiting, he heard the click of the lock, and the door swung open.

His breath caught in his throat as he took in the sight before him.

Nana Ayiba stood before him, looking incredibly radiant and resplendent in a glorious yellow gown that seemed to illuminate the hallway behind her. The gown hugged her curves in all the right places, and a daring slit revealed a hint of her shapely leg.

“Wow!” Kwesi breathed, his voice barely above a whisper as he took in her beauty. He knew she was quite the hottie, but he was way more accustomed to seeing her in work attire. This was new. And incredibly sweet to the eyes.

Nana Ayiba laughed, a melodious sound that sent shivers down his spine. “Speechless, abi?” she teased, striking a playful pose for him.

Kwesi could only nod, his words failing him in the face of her stunning presence.

Just then, Madam Theresa appeared beside her, a smile lighting up her face as she took in the scene before her.

“Helloooooo, Kwesi! You’re looking absolutely stunning!” she exclaimed, clasping her hands together in delight.

Kwesi smiled shyly. The way this woman had instantly embraced him as a prospective son-in-law was something he still could not understand, but was incredibly grateful for her affection.

“Thank you, Auntie,” he said, managing to find his voice again.

“And your dear girlfriend too is… what’s the word you young people use for looking good these days?”

Nana Ayiba giggled. “Slaying, Mama.”

“Aha! Your girlfriend too is slaying. 3ni3 tonight will be special paaa.”

Nana Ayiba nodded, smiling at Kwesi. “Absolutely. It’s going to be a very special night.”

“Okay, so my dear, have a wonderful time. And Kwesi, I know you’ll bring my daughter home safe and sound, so I’m not worried kraaa.”

Kwesi laughed as Nana Ayiba joined him. “Of course, Auntie. You don’t need to worry about that kraaa. She’s safe with me.”

Amen. Have a good time!”

“Thank you! We will!”

As they made their way to the restaurant, Nana Ayiba asked, “Kwesi, have you been able to call your senior yet?”

He looked over at her, a bit confused. “My senior?”

“The lecturer. The one who gave birth two days ago.”

“Ahhhh, Kwentsiwa! Ei, no ooo! In fact, now that you’ve said it, lemme call her now.”

He immediately took his phone and handed it to her, and she duly called the number.

Kwentsiwa answered on the third ring. “Hello, Kwesi.”

“Heyyysshhhh! The latest momee in town! I greet you ooo! Congratulations!”

A tired but delighted laugh followed. “Thanks ooo, thanks. Hei! Childbirth is not an easy process oo! Hmmm. But God took me through. I can only be grateful.”

“Awww, we thank God. And how’s the little baby boy?”

“He’s doing fine, he’s doing fine. The way he looks like Oliver, eh… after carrying him for nine months, he can’t even resemble me small? Ahba!”

Kwesi and Nana Ayiba stifled giggles. “Oh, seniormost counsel, what more can I say? It is what it is.”

“I’m looking for sympathy, see what you are telling me! Herh, issokay, issokay…”

Kwesi laughed out loud. “Oh, senior, don’t do that. I understand you, please.”

“Understand what? My friend, my friend, let me think. Troublesome young man.”

Kwesi looked over at Nana Ayiba, who was still holding her laughter in. “Please, I’m sorry. There’s someone with me who may sympathize with you.”

“Ei, really? Nana Ayiba, are you there?”

Nana Ayiba smiled. “Yes counsel. Good evening, and congratulations!”

“Thank you ooo, thank you. Since you’re here di33, lemme talk to you mohm, na that troublesome boyfriend of yours, eh, if I follow him…”

Kwesi continued to laugh as Kwentsiwa began to engage Nana Ayiba in conversation and focused on the road.

He really couldn’t be happier with life as it was. He had hoped for the very best when he left familiar surroundings for this place. It was incredible to think that within about five to six months, things had already gone so well for him. Corpus Juris Attorneys couldn’t have been a better place to be, he was learning so much from his in-office colleagues and Mr. Gyasi Ofori, with whom he had developed a good bond. He had a pretty good landlord who barely troubled him as he dwelt in his two-bedroom apartment…

… and now he had the most beautiful woman by his side. The journey might not have been that long, but it sure wasn’t easy. And he couldn’t be happier about that.

Ackronie Restaurant had quite an ambiance: warm and inviting, with soft lighting and good music playing in the background. Kwesi and Nana Ayiba sat across from each other at a cozy table, their faces illuminated by the joy within their hearts.

As they enjoyed their meal, Kwesi briefly excused himself and stepped away to go to the washroom.

As he returned, after completing another important task elsewhere, he couldn’t help but feel a rush of overwhelming happiness spread through him as he stared at Nana Ayiba. In that moment, she had never looked more beautiful.

“Hey, you,” he called gently.

She looked up at him.

He reached across the table, gently taking Nana Ayiba’s hand in his own. “You know something?”

She shook her head.

“You know, when I came to Accra, I remember saying to myself ‘welcome to a new disposition’. I was thinking to myself, this is a new chapter in my life. New place to stay, new job, new career progression. I knew that, and… I couldn’t be happier. When it came to romance, I have to be honest, I never really had that in mind. I didn’t focus on it, coz chale, I was more wild about my career ambitions. Not that I hated love or anything, it just wasn’t on my mind like that. I can’t lie, Nana, that all changed from the moment I saw you in court on the first day I came there.”

A slight blush crept up her cheeks at his words. “Awwww! Really?” she replied.

Kwesi nodded, reaching across the table to take her hand in his. “Yeah,” he continued, his gaze never leaving hers. “I have to be straight with you: from the first day I saw you, I couldn’t stop thinking about you. When you walked in a bit late and all, chale, my mind borst! And I never imagined that you and I would come this far. I’m loving this. You’re everything I’ve ever dreamed of and more.”

A soft, tender expression crossed Nana Ayiba’s face as she squeezed his hand gently. “Kwesi, everything happens for a reason. I truly believe that. God made sure our paths crossed for a purpose, and I’m grateful for that. Getting to know you has been simply beautiful, and I love every moment we’ve shared together.”

“Me too. And as far as I’m concerned, it’s only going to get better and better. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for us, Nana. I’m really excited. I pray this becomes a long and lovely journey where we choose each other, no matter what.”

“Me too, Kwesi, me too. Shall we toast to that?”

“Sure.” They took up their glasses. “To us and choosing each other.”

“To us and choosing each other.”

They clinked their glasses.

Just then, their tender moment was interrupted by the restaurant’s DJ, who grabbed the microphone. “Ladies and gentlemen, hope you’re having a wonderful evening. This is DJ Debussy, purveyor of perfect playlist, and it’s a privilege to give you good music tonight. So, we have a special request tonight! And it’s from a guy to his new girlfriend.”

Nana Ayiba’s eyes widened in surprise, and Kwesi felt a thrill of anticipation course through him. Here it was, the cute little surprise he had planned for her.

The DJ continued, reading out the heartfelt message. “To my darling, you are the light of my life. Every moment with you feels like a dream come true, and I’m grateful for every second I get to spend with you. You are my sweetie pie.”

Nana Ayiba’s cheeks flushed with delight, already aware that the dedication was from Kwesi. Her eyes met his, brimming with love and happiness.

Suddenly, the familiar strains of Kofi Kinaata’s “Sweetie Pie” filled the air, and Nana Ayiba’s face lit up with delight.

“Oh my Gooddddddd!” she squealed excitedly, hugging Kwesi. “Thank you, thank you, thank youuuu! You know how much I love this songgggg!”

Kwesi laughed as he hugged her back. “Yep! Anything to make you happy, my dear. And I think a little dance is in order.”

Kwesi rose from his seat, extending his hand to Nana Ayiba.

“Shall we?” he asked, his voice filled with warmth.

Nana Ayiba’s eyes sparkled with delight as she accepted his hand, rising to her feet to join him. “We shall.”

“Is that the correct way to say it?”

“Who cares? Or you want to mark me?”

Kwesi laughed, then led her out and began to boogie, much to the admiration of everyone around. He slipped his arms around her waist, which had her raising an eyebrow.

“Is it me, or you just wanted a chance to hold my waist?” she asked slyly.

Kwesi grinned. “Oh, I dunno. Maybe, maybe not. Maybe I just realized that chale, your meat dey borst my brain pass…”

Nana Ayiba laughed. “Herh! This is what Kwentsiwa was talking about when she said you’re a handful, eh?”

“Exactly. Guess what, though? Unlike Mrs. Fynn, you’re stuck with me and my troublemaker ways.”

Nana Ayiba smiled and wrapped her arms around his neck as she shook her head. “I guess that’s true. As long as you put a smile on my face with your love, though, that’s alright. I’ll deal with your troublemaking ways.”

“Don’t you worry about that, my sweetie pie. I’ll definitely do that.”

“Thank you. And also, you’re not allowed to japa without me.”

Kwesi looked confused for a moment, then laughed out loud. “Oh, don’t you worry, my dear. I’m staying here with you. You’re a part of my new dispensation, so chale, I need you around. Always.”

“Better,” Nana Ayiba smiled at him.

As they swayed together to the rhythm of the music, enjoying each other’s presence and cherishing their little banter, they knew that this moment would be etched in their memories forever. For they were exactly where they were meant to be.

With each other.

Choosing each other.

THE END
